. Your business will be a year old in January Kia – has time flown by?
“It has – time always flies when one is busy and I am fortunate enough to say that my various clients have kept me on my toes. I have been sourcing all types of fascinating products and, although only 10% usually get used within a project, I love to broaden my knowledge with regard to what products are ‘out there’. I am like an encyclopaedia for obscure furniture!”
Why was it the right time to strike out on your own?
“Everything is about timing: I didn’t carefully calculate that I was going to suddenly start my own business – a chain of events occurred that meant it was the correct time and I seized that opportunity.”
Weren’t you daunted by the recession?
“A recession is an economic spring clean. In other words, it mostly affects businesses that lack stability. I felt that I could build a stable business that would be sustainable and I therefore gave a respectful glance to the recession, but was not intimidated by it.”
What do you offer clients?
“The best possible interior design service. There are always bumps in the road when it comes to redecoration, but I always put my client first and I really focus upon giving them what they need at a price they can afford. I strive to work alongside my client: a lot of people think that an interior designer gets to play ‘changing rooms’ with someone’s house. It isn’t like that – it is a process that the designer and the client spend many hours considering.”
Why does this approach work in your eyes?
“Clients know what they want, but they don’t necessarily know how to get there. I like to fuse their vision with my knowledge of product and design ability. Interior design is not about working towards a beautiful shoot for a magazine, it is about creating or reinventing someone’s home.”
Can you give us an example of the projects you undertake?
“I specialise in residential interiors (although I have experience in other areas). Clients usually want me to redo their living room as it is the room that they spend the majority of their waking hours: it is also the room within which they entertain.”
What are your plans for the future?
“I want to continue to expand my business in a sensible way and without taking unnecessary risks. A lot of companies go out of business even though they are making a lot of money as their overheads spiral out of control, so I am wary of allowing the business to grow too quickly. The one thing that I will never forget is that the business lives or dies upon customer satisfaction.”
